Poll: My son’s first word.
My wife and I were discussing this the other night. My son has been chattering a lot more these days. To give you a bit of a background, my son just turned 8 months old and while it’s been some time since he’s discovered he can use his voice for things other than screaming for his bottle or letting us know he’s ready to wake up in the morning, he’s just started expressing himself vocally.
While we were holding him one night, he went from making “GAH GAH GAH GAH GAH” sounds to “AHK AHK AHK.” Then, out of nowhere, he says the word “cock” with perfect clarity. I laughed my ass off and my wife tried explaining that he’d actually said “gock,” with a G, not “cock” with a C. I tried taking advantage of the situation by getting him to use the phonetic “AHK” sound to form “Barack.”
Tonight, while my wife was volunteering to help me test my sparkly new microphone that may or may not be used for a podcast hosted at blargen.com, (¬_¬ ) I was able to capture him saying it again while recording! He started with the “AHK” stuff again, so I tried, for the second time, to get him to say “Barack.” Hey, might as well start ‘em young. Then, instead, he said cock.
So I submit for your perusal an mp3 of the event in question. I didn’t cut anything out in the middle of this clip, so it runs from when I hit the record button until the word in question happens. The setting was casual and completely unplanned, so I’m not exactly using a radio voice or any other pretense, be warned. The file is about 2.1 MB and runs for 2 minutes and 11 seconds.
Let me know what you guys think! What was my son’s first word: Gock or Cock?

“Gock”???? That’s not even a word. Little Reno knows better. Clearly, that was COCK.
You know, there’s something creepy about sitting here in headphones listening to your recording. i dunno . . . i feel like such a voyeur.
By the way, what kind of mic did you get?

Know how I know you’re gay, Reno?

Hey, I got proof that kid is biologically mine.

It’s all USB, and the Cakewalk software the package with it is quite useful. Haven’t figured out how to take the reverb effect off my mic, so currently I’m using freeware called “Audacity” to test it and do freestyle recordings. I’m also strongly considering getting the C03U package. The mic there has omni-directional capabilities and would be great for co-hosts and guests. Also cool, I should be able to support as many mics on my computer as I have USB slots.
Other goodies means an extra license for the software, so I could have a friend try it out and get accustomed to it. I don’t, however, think the whole case is aluminum. I’m pretty sure the side panels are plastic, but I’m not going to try breaking it to find out.

Yeah, I saw it…I mean, heard it! “cock” it is! Let’s have some more!

Haha, niiice.
This is going to end up being one of those things I use to coerce some compliance by threatening to show to his girlfriends when he’s in high school.

“Gock” is a word, Kevin…haven’t you ever read Dr. Seuss?? ;O) I know I definitely read the word in one of his books..probably “The Fox in Socks”.

Jenny: Actually, I’m ashamed to admit I’m not up to speed on my Dr. Seuss. But, it occurred to me, he could have been saying “gawk” . . . if it weren’t so clearly “cock.” :)
Reno: looks like a nice package deal. Very convenient to have a USB mic. No additional interface needed. I’ve heard good things about Sonar. Never tried it - I’m a Pro Tools guy. But, sometimes I think it would be nice to have a VST platform for all the freeware/shareware plug-ins out there. Pro Tools RTAS plugs make life a bit more expensive to expand (but, I already have most of what I could ever want).
Audacity is a great free program. I use it to play most music files on my laptop. I also use it to record music ideas on my laptop. I plug my headphones into the mic jack, and use them as a mic (can’t be bothered to walk down into the studio and grab a real mic).
I agree: omni mic would obviously be good for multiple guests, or if you’re recording a couple of singers for a backing vox track. Or, if you just want to record more of the ambient “room” sound.

Ohhh yes, I’m very excited about the VSTs. I’m actually scouting the net for some right now. What will knock me off the mountain of free I currently sit on is the instrument packages once I purchase a decent keyboard.
LOL at the headphones-as-microphone trick. I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve used it.
I wouldn’t want to get ambient room noises, though. It’s mostly PC fans going “WHIIRRRRRRRRRR!!” I really need to replace that fan. :-/

Yep…that was definitely cock. Kids say the darndest things…LOL
He sounds like a total heartbreaker! :o)

He is. I played the clip for my in-laws, my aunt and uncle, and my grandparents over the weekend. They concur on cock.
The moms, both his and mine, are still in denial. :P
